11:42pm: Miso and Masa
Mis y Mas is what my LJ it titled.
It's named for the two types of non-essay, non-blog, non-writing I end up dribbling around here.

Mis are the little random bits. Short, albeit not always to the point. Just dropping thoughts, when there is no time to think clearly and write.

Well, some of you have Twitter.
I have Mis. Or, Miso.

Little tiny particles of the most basic rudimentary type of life, fermenting for far too long into something funky--often mixed in hot water. Sip it--nothing much to see, but possibly something new to your taste.

****************8

Mas is the other side---those long running overblooming bits of right-brained kudzu that come out of my lobes at 12.30am.

Or Masa: basic stuff of everyday life, ground and reground until it breaks down into nothing but a huge lump of mush. Often bland at this point--but occasionally wrapped around something savory.

****************
Edit: And damned if the above doesn't read like a Lynn Patterson Sunday strip.
Meh. It stays. Miso and Masa.
7:28pm: Dear Google
I've been charmed by the depiction of the various animals of the Chinese zodiac, and other folklore, shown participating in various Olympic sports.

Today's has been interesting. But please tell me:
Which story has the magic Chinese sperm?
11:08am: Not major news for the McCain camp, or voters...
but Cindy McCain is not an only child.

This will not make a difference in how I evaluate the McCain--first ladies make no difference to the campaign.

But between this and Cindy's refusals to reveal personal financial information,
I'm starting to find her a bit irritating.

************
One other note: For all I know, The Other McCain may be the sort of sibling one REALLY wishes to forget with good reason. There may be some very good reason her family was left without an active credit card. And that's going to get ugly for her if she expects no one to dig up any material.

But I'm suprised Cindy McCain has not learned the political lesson of the last few years:
nothing and no one stays hidden when you are running for Very Public office.
Did she think unhappy people were going to stay quiet?

Everybody's got to learn. Jenna Bush. Roger Clinton. Maureeen Reagan. Billy Carter. Oy vey, Billy Carter.

I think it could work--think of chewy toast.

Actually, he just knows everyone who wears a corset.

LRC, please note: S17 does not wear a corset. Nor is likely to.
But boy does she know food.

12:38pm: Another poem for the day--cummings and mockummings
Sometimes teachers give "model" assignments in poetry. The ee cummings and the student model is from
Writing the Natural Way by Gabriele Lusser Rico.

(I love this book so much....the front cover finally fell off this week.)

If you have read cummings, the student piece is a kick.

EVERY county in California--hell, nationwide--is doing a crackdown on drunken driving--and other DUI. That starts TODAY, and through Labor Day weekend.

Know your real limits, especially if you are drinking a few hours before leaving site, even if you are driving for just for a few blocks. Watch how much you drink, remember to eat.

Yeah, I know you guys know.
Just be careful.

You may find more problems in the suburbs---that's where local police have the room and the manpower to set up random stop locations.

North Texas in Fairfield is going to look like a parade route.

11:50am: Mr. Snuffy just sayin'
So not know what prompted it, but Mr. Snuffy responded to one of my comments with his Snuffleupagus voice: "Now, Big Biirrd..."

I listened, and pointed out: "Your Mr. Snuffleupagus is starting to sound like Jack Nicholson."

insert pause of a few beats here....

"Really? How so"

Tried to duplicate the sound, but I just can't.

Mr. Snuffy: "What kind of accent is Jack Nicholson?"
Temperance: "I dunno---somewhere between New Jersey and Northern California"
Mr. Snuffy: "Where is that--Wyoming?"

But, if you can get the sound in your head of classic Easy Rider-Five Easy Pieces-Chinatown Jack---that laid back yet coiled to strike tone of Jack....just sort of rolling out and punching up the cadences of your average Snuffy imitation.

"Now, y'see, it's like THIS, Biiirrrd..."

Just sayin'.

*****************
Addendum: Which means, if we recast Easy Rider or Chinatown with Snuffy in the Jack roles, what other Muppets are in the cast?

I know it's the Olympics
I know I sneer, or rather, have given up enthusiasm
I know is the sport nobody else cares about.

We should.

We swept the women's sabre. Gold, Silver, Bronze
OK, three women from the United States did all the work.
But...

8:14am: Digging
I know you all have seen this poem in school. Sorry if it's stale to the rest of you.
(At least I assume it should be by now---it shows up a great deal on pirated essay websites.)

Poem of the day: Digging, by Seamus Heaney

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun.

Under my window, a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down

Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.

The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly.
He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep
To scatter new potatoes that we picked,
Loving their cool hardness in our hands.

By God, the old man could handle a spade.
Just like his old man.

My grandfather cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner's bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, going down and down
For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I'll dig with it.

5:13pm: NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me - Aug 2 2008
Just wander over here, and click on Panel Round Two.

The first half is for the silly giggles.
The second half is for snorts and indignation cries from strict DCF costume afficianados.

We were amused.

It's a family show, but I don't know if you want to play audio files about V.P. choices or ladies' small clothes.
10:46am: Auntie Mame
I had to post this question without [info]labelleizzy available to answer, but:

Did/do you have an Auntie Mame?
Did you have an alternate adult in your life, who gave you a different view than your parents offered?

Or, did you have a "alternate adult" who tried to open your mind to walking through life an an angle?

Or-or: did you have the off-kilter family, and one adult gave you some straight-forward guidance.

and at this point, I need to give a shout out to Aunt Maxine.
Maybe call her, if she isn't on the road right now.

******************
And by the way, this list really does include teachers.
Because everyone has that teacher who 1) knows all is not well with you, 2) offers a different view point, 3) pisses off another adult who needed pissing.

So casual, it's not worth making buttons.

How many of you still use Tribe? Regularly?
For what? Do you have regular Tribes or Tribe Members whom you bookmark and track. Do you get automatic updates on these as you do in LJ?

What does tribe do for you that LJ doesn't or vice versa?

1:40pm: August events
OK, [info]tsgeisel has brought up the question regarding happenings for this weekend.
And [info]agengrgal points out a website about the travels of a tall ship that will be in Sac through Aug 11, if I reading this right.

I know there are museum exhibits upcoming in Aug and Sep---SOMEWHERE.

We've got Golden Gate. What other events, fun, exhibits, parties, are coming up?

I know of a Bard and a Birthday. There's other stuff at the back of my brain.
If you invited me to something, and don't see it here, get in touch with me.

Sorry to be vague, but it's one such a day.

Have we got enough enthused people going to pryactice this week?

Did this sound naggy, especially coming from someone who normally says, "AAAhhhhhhdunno if I wanna do that dance...."

*insert sound of whip cracking*

"...Hokay I'll dance!"

Anywho...never mind me: who's going to dance?
